For decades, Intel stood as the undisputed giant of microprocessors, its “Intel Inside” label etched into the memory of every consumer who owned a PC. But today, the company is a shadow of its former self, bleeding cash in its bid to reclaim semiconductor leadership, relying on government handouts to stay afloat, and struggling to win customers for its next-generation process nodes. Calls for nationalization or a federal equity stake may sound like a lifeline, but in reality, keeping Intel on artificial support is more likely to drag down innovation, efficiency, and capital allocation in the broader technology ecosystem. The most rational solution, painful as it may seem, is to let Intel fail and allow the industry to move on.
Intel’s decline is not a sudden misfortune but the product of a decade of mismanagement and missed opportunities. While Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung pushed ahead with aggressive scaling and cutting-edge fabs, Intel faltered on its 10nm transition, then fell even further behind on 7nm and beyond. Its highly publicized turnaround plan, centered on the foundry business and advanced nodes like 18A, has yet to materialize in meaningful external demand. Nationalizing Intel, or allowing the government to take a significant stake, would only institutionalize failure. Bureaucrats and politicians would begin influencing production decisions, leadership appointments, and customer commitments—all areas that demand speed and market discipline rather than political negotiation. Instead of fostering resilience, such a move risks creating a bloated, uncompetitive entity that siphons capital away from true innovators. Technology history shows that market-driven disruption always outpaces state-managed stagnation: once-mighty players like Sun Microsystems, Nokia, and BlackBerry vanished, yet the industry kept advancing, often faster and stronger without them.
The national security argument for preserving Intel at all costs is overstated. While it is true that the U.S. has ceded manufacturing leadership to Asia, the semiconductor supply chain is already diversifying. TSMC is building advanced fabs in Arizona, Samsung is expanding in Texas, and smaller specialty players are flourishing. Moreover, the industry is shifting toward design and architecture as the key competitive edge, not raw manufacturing muscle. Nvidia dominates AI chips, AMD is gaining ground in servers, and Apple’s in-house silicon redefined mobile computing. These companies do not depend on Intel’s survival; if anything, they are thriving because Intel lost its edge.
Letting Intel die would free resources—talent, capital, and government attention—that are currently being wasted propping up a relic of the past. Engineers would flow to more innovative firms, private investors would redirect funds to emerging leaders, and policymakers could focus on strengthening infrastructure, education, and security partnerships rather than trying to micromanage a failing corporation. The collapse of Intel would not cripple the technology world; it would clear the way for a healthier, more dynamic, and more competitive ecosystem.
The temptation to preserve icons of the past is always strong, especially when national pride and strategic anxieties are involved. But technology evolves by creative destruction, not nostalgic protectionism. Intel had its era, and it was glorious. That era is over. The best solution now is not to nationalize it, not to save it, but to let it die—and allow the future of computing to flourish without it.
