The Era of Perpetual Undersupply: Why AI Infrastructure Is Entering a Supercycle

When OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar admitted that the company is “constantly under compute,” even after logging its first $1 billion revenue month in July, it crystallized the reality of the AI economy: demand for compute is growing at a pace that even the largest hyperscalers and chip suppliers cannot keep up with. This is not simply a temporary imbalance between supply and demand; it is the beginning of a structural supercycle in AI infrastructure. Every model trained, every inference made at scale, and every enterprise deployment consumes computational resources at levels that were unfathomable only a few years ago. What Friar’s remark highlights is the paradox of AI economics—revenue can scale to the billions monthly, yet the growth ceiling is constrained not by customers or capital, but by silicon.

The phrase “under compute” should be understood as both a technical bottleneck and a macroeconomic thesis. Technically, large language models and foundation models are now so vast that they stress the physical limits of data center architectures, forcing companies to ration GPU clusters, allocate jobs across continents, and delay deployments. Macroeconomically, it suggests that demand for AI services is being artificially suppressed by infrastructure shortages. If supply were unconstrained, revenue would likely be even higher, perhaps multiples higher. This has profound implications for capital allocation: every dollar invested in GPU capacity, high-bandwidth memory, or networking throughput translates into additional AI-driven revenue capture.

For the semiconductor industry, this is the most bullish scenario imaginable. Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom are not just suppliers—they are the gatekeepers of AI growth. Nvidia’s H100 and upcoming architectures remain the gold standard for model training and inference at scale, AMD’s MI300 family is rapidly becoming a credible challenger with performance-per-dollar advantages, and Broadcom’s custom silicon and networking fabrics ensure data moves across sprawling AI clusters with minimal latency. In aggregate, these firms form the backbone of what is now the most lucrative capital cycle in technology since the dawn of the internet.

The “under compute” dynamic also reframes how investors and strategists should think about AI adoption. Unlike traditional software, where scaling is bound primarily by distribution costs, AI scaling is bounded by physical constraints of energy, cooling, and semiconductors. This creates a built-in growth guarantee for infrastructure providers: as long as demand exists—and OpenAI’s revenue milestone confirms it does—there will be relentless pressure to expand compute capacity. Enterprises deploying AI copilots, autonomous agents, and simulation systems are experiencing similar bottlenecks, ensuring that the undercompute problem is systemic, not unique to OpenAI.

This moment is therefore less about whether AI is a bubble and more about how quickly capital can flow into infrastructure to unlock suppressed demand. History offers a parallel in the early 2000s broadband buildout, where insatiable internet traffic growth forced an overhaul of global telecommunications. The difference now is that AI’s revenue model is already validated—$1 billion in a single month proves monetization, but also proves constraint. The bottleneck is not willingness to pay, but the pace of infrastructure build.

What Sarah Friar described in one phrase is in fact the defining characteristic of the AI economy: we are perpetually under compute. Until that gap narrows—and there is no sign it will anytime soon—the companies building the infrastructure will remain the fulcrum of the entire ecosystem. For investors, technologists, and policymakers alike, this means the real story of AI is not simply about algorithms or applications. It is about silicon, power, and networks—the hard foundations that make intelligence at scale possible.

A supercycle in general economic and market terms refers to an extended period, often lasting years or even decades, in which demand for a particular asset, commodity, or sector grows so strongly that it consistently outpaces supply. This imbalance drives sustained price increases and attracts waves of investment, creating a self-reinforcing loop. Unlike short-term booms or cyclical upswings, a supercycle is not about temporary demand spikes; it is about long-duration structural shifts—often triggered by technological breakthroughs, demographic changes, or geopolitical realignments. Famous examples include the post–World War II industrial boom, the decades-long oil supercycle beginning in the 1970s, and the China-led commodities supercycle of the 2000s that transformed global markets for steel, copper, and energy.

In the specific context of AI infrastructure, a supercycle describes the prolonged period in which demand for computing power, advanced semiconductors, and networking capacity grows faster than global supply can scale. OpenAI’s CFO Sarah Friar saying the company is “constantly under compute” illustrates this dynamic: even at $1 billion per month in revenue, growth is bottlenecked by lack of GPUs, high-bandwidth memory, and power delivery systems. This is not a short-term mismatch—it is a structural reality because every new generation of AI models is more compute-hungry than the last. The gap between demand and supply means that companies like Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom will experience sustained, compounding demand for their products, driving their revenues and valuations higher over an extended period.

What makes this an AI infrastructure supercycle rather than just a growth phase is the inevitability of reinvestment. Each cycle of AI adoption—whether in cybersecurity, enterprise productivity, robotics, or autonomous vehicles—requires orders of magnitude more compute than the last. Unlike software, which scales digitally, AI scales physically, demanding more chips, more power, more cooling, and more interconnects. That creates a long-duration demand curve similar to how urbanization drove steel and cement demand, or how digitization fueled decades of semiconductor growth. In short, the AI supercycle is the prolonged, self-reinforcing expansion of infrastructure spending, where “under compute” is not a temporary inconvenience but the defining condition of the entire era.
