AMD Slides in Premarket as Intel Soars on $5 Billion Nvidia Investment

September 18, 2025 By Analysis.org

AMD shares tumbled around 5% in premarket trading after a dramatic shift in market sentiment that favored its longtime rival Intel. The catalyst was Nvidia’s announcement that it will invest $5 billion in Intel, a move that sent Intel stock surging more than 30% and rattled investors who had been betting on AMD as the more immediate beneficiary of the AI and data center boom.

This development effectively rewrites parts of the semiconductor narrative. Nvidia, the undisputed leader in GPUs and AI acceleration, aligning so closely with Intel sends a strong signal about where the next phase of competition and collaboration in the chip industry may unfold. For years, Intel has been fighting to reclaim its reputation after lagging behind both AMD and Nvidia in critical product cycles. With Nvidia’s cash and technical partnership, Intel suddenly looks poised to reinsert itself into the heart of AI infrastructure, from data center CPUs to integrated AI solutions.

For AMD, the optics are unfavorable. Much of its recent valuation premium has rested on the idea that it could continue carving into Intel’s CPU dominance while simultaneously expanding its footprint in AI accelerators through its Instinct GPUs and the MI300 series. Now, with Nvidia publicly throwing weight behind Intel, some investors fear AMD will be squeezed on both fronts: losing some of the CPU narrative to a resurgent Intel, and facing an even tougher uphill battle against Nvidia in GPUs.

The selloff is also psychological. AMD is still a formidable competitor with strong products and proven execution, but markets are forward-looking. A $5 billion vote of confidence in Intel from Nvidia is not just capital; it is symbolic of a partnership that could shape the direction of AI hardware over the next decade. Traders often react by repositioning quickly, taking profits in names like AMD and chasing momentum in the stock perceived to be the new beneficiary—in this case, Intel.

At the same time, this does not mean AMD’s story is broken. Its EPYC server CPUs remain highly competitive, its AI accelerators are being adopted in major systems, and its long-term roadmap remains intact. But for the near term, the balance of excitement in the semiconductor space has shifted. With Intel resurgent and Nvidia reshaping alliances, AMD faces a steeper climb to prove that its AI and data center ambitions can hold up in a more crowded and politically complicated landscape.

The 5% premarket fall reflects how quickly investor psychology can shift in this high-stakes sector. Semiconductors are not just about quarterly earnings but about strategic alignments that can redefine who controls the future of computing. This morning, Nvidia and Intel changed that balance—and AMD was the first to feel the heat.
